Chapter 7

Addy

“Just like this,” Travis says, demonstrating how to remove the perfectly toasted marshmallow from the stick and sandwich it between the graham crackers and chocolate. His movements are so deliberate, like everything he does, a sort of careful precision that I’m starting to associate with him. “And now,” he adds, holding up the gooey creation like it’s a masterpiece, “you have a s’more.”

I giggle, feeling a little silly and warm inside. “So easy,” I reply, mimicking his technique but with far less finesse. The marshmallow sticks to my fingers, and I end up with more of it on my hands than between the crackers. “Or not.”

He chuckles, the deep sound of it blending with the crackle of the fire. “It’s all about patience.” His eyes twinkle slightly, making me wonder if he’s talking about more than just the marshmallow.

I fumble with my sticky creation, trying to keep it from falling apart. “Well, patience isn’t exactly my strong suit. Especially when it comes to desserts.”

Travis leans back, watching me with a smirk playing on his lips. “I would’ve guessed that.”

I glance over at him, narrowing my eyes playfully. “Oh, really? And what gave that away, Mr. Marshmallow Master?”

He grins, biting into his own s’more with practiced ease. “Just a hunch.”

The firelight flickers between us, casting shadows on the rustic wooden walls of his cabin. The storm outside rages on, but in here, by the fire, it feels strangely peaceful. Like we’ve created this little bubble of warmth, away from the world. I take a messy bite of my s’more, marshmallow oozing out from the sides and sticking to my lips.

“Okay, maybe I see the appeal now,” I mumble, trying to catch the runaway marshmallow before it gets worse. “These are amazing.”

Travis watches me for a second, his gaze lingering a bit too long, and I feel a blush creep up my cheeks. His eyes are soft, not the guarded, suspicious look he had when we first met. There’s something warmer in them now, like he’s letting his walls down—just a little.

“You’ve got a little…” He gestures to his own lips, and I realize too late that I’ve got marshmallow smeared across mine.

“Oh, great,” I mutter, trying to wipe it off with the back of my hand. Of course, now I just look ridiculous, smearing it more.

Travis laughs again, but this time it’s softer, almost tender. Without thinking, he leans forward, grabbing a napkin from the side table, and gently wipes away the mess from my face. His fingers brush against my skin for just a second, but it sends a jolt of warmth through me that has nothing to do with the fire.

“There,” he says, his voice a little quieter. “All clean.”

I blink, not sure what to say, because the sudden closeness between us is unexpected but not unwelcome. The way his eyes lock onto mine makes my heart skip a beat, and for a moment, I forget about the storm, the power outage, and the fact that we’re two complete strangers thrown together by circumstance.
